The Indians are called Lamanites in the Book of Mormon.  Jesus wanted
the Lamanites [American Indians] to read the Book of Mormon….The
Book of Mormon would tell the Lamanites [American Indians] about
their ancestors who lived 2,000 years ago.  p. 58  my emphasis

1995-2: The Book of Mormon: A Sacred Ancient Record,” by Elder Ted
E. Brewerton  Oct. 1995 General Conference

The Book of Mormon is a record of families that the Lord led to the Americas
for specific purposes. Three groups left the land of Jerusalem and
crossed the oceans, beginning several centuries before the birth of our Savior,
and arrived in the promised land, the Americas.
-----
Elder Mark E. Petersen, a member of the Council of the Twelve Apostles, wrote:

As the ancient Israelites suffered a dispersion which sprinkled them among
all the nations, so the descendants of Laman and Lemuel (sons of Lehi) [a
Jewish father mentioned in the B of M] were sifted over the vast areas of
the western hemisphere. They are found from pole to pole” (“Children of
Promise," Salt Lake City: Bookcraft, 1981, p. 31; emphasis added).

Many migratory groups came to the Americas, but none was as important as
the three mentioned in the Book of Mormon. The blood of these people
flows in the veins of the Blackfoot and the Blood Indians of Alberta,
Canada; in the Navajo and the Apache of the American Southwest; the
Inca of western South America; the Aztec of Mexico; the Maya of Guatemala;
and in other native American groups in the Western Hemisphere and the
Pacific islands.

“These choice native people recognize the truth of the Book of Mormon,
which was recorded for them by their own ancestors.

April 1996 General Conference
May 1996 Ensign

I saw it in South America as I looked into the faces of missionaries.

Hundreds of them passed by me, shaking my hand and looking deeply
into my eyes. I was nearly overwhelmed with the confirmation that these
children of Father Lehi and of Sariah were there in the Lord’s service…
in the eyes and faces of those missionaries I felt confirmation that God
has kept his promises to reach out to Lehi’s covenant children and that
he will reach out to ours.

The Book of Mormon tells about the people who lived on the American
continent long ago.

The missionaries reached Independence, Missouri, in February.  Three of
them traveled farther west to visit the Delaware Indians.  The leader of
these Indians, Chief Anderson, called a meeting of all the chiefs of his
people...He wanted his people to hear about this book [Book of Mormon]
that was a record of their ancestors, the Lamanites. p. 66  my emphasis

Native American Conference

A one-day conference for Native Americans was held on 25 July in Provo,
Utah... Between 400 and 500 people attended, representing tribes from
across the United States.

Elder M. Russell Ballard:  “You would not believe what has happened in
Latin America [Latin America: all of the Americas south of the United States,
Merriam Webster].  You would be overwhelmed if you had the opportunity to
shake hands with Lamanite stake presidents and bishops who have
come out of the world and embraced the gospel.

What Are the Articles of Faith?

“The prophet [Joseph Smith] was occasionally called on to explain the
teachings and practices of Mormonism to outsiders.  A significant
example was the Wentworth Letter….

...it [the Wentworth Letter] has become one of the most important
statements of inspiration, history, and doctrine for the Church”  (“Church
History in the Fulness of Times,” 256-57).

The Wentworth Letter

Following is [an excerpt] of the Wentworth Letter, as written by the
Prophet Joseph Smith:

“I was also informed concerning the aboriginal inhabitants of this country
[in the next sentence, it identifies America as “...this country”] and
shown who they were, and from whence they came; a brief sketch of their
origin,...In this important and interesting book [the Book of Mormon] the
history of ancient America is unfolded…
We are informed by these records [the Book of Mormon] that America in
ancient times has been inhabited by two distinct races of people...The
second race came directly from the city of Jerusalem...They were
principally Israelites, of the descendants of Joseph [a Hebrew]. The
Jaredites [the first race] were destroyed about the time that the Israelites
[the second race] came from Jerusalem, who succeeds them in the
inheritance of the country [America]. The principal nation of the second
race [the Nephites] fell in battle towards the close of the fourth century.
The remnant [the Lamanites] are the Indians that now inhabit this
country [America].”  pp. 66-67 my emphasis
[What place is the “Wentworth Letter,” referring to when it says,
“...this country,” and “America?”

The Possibilities seem to be:

A. Western Hemisphere (both North and South America): the most likely,

because every Prophet since Jos Smith said it was, at least until recently.
Also, because in the early 1800s many people’s concept of America was both
North and South America
B. North America: possibly, especially considering the letter’s references
to America
C. Northeastern part of North America:  possibly, because this is where
Joseph Smith resided
D. Eastern half, or a part thereof, of North America: may be a possibility
E. Mesoamerica (This location, Mesoamerica, has been taught for over a
decade in all Mormon Church schools, Seminaries, Institutes of Religion, etc.
as, “...this country” and “America”):
I would consider “Mesoamerica” to be an impossible option. Why?  Because,
as you’ll recall at the beginning of this Church manual’s article, it says, “...it
[the Wentworth Letter] has become one of the most important statements
of inspiration, history, and doctrine for the Church.”  The fact that the letter
is actual “Church doctrine” would seem to eliminate the possibility that any
part of it was just Joseph Smith’s opinion, mistaken understanding, etc. This,
combined with “A” above, would unquestionably eliminate the possibility of
Mesoamerica being the aforementioned, “this country” or “America.”  If not,
then the Mormon Church and every Prophet for over 170 years has
been categorically wrong about this point.]
