“The Greatest Event in Ancient America,” by Elder Milton R. Hunter,
June 1961 Improvement Era

These tremendous convulsions of nature not only impressed the Nephites
greatly so that they recorded them in their history [3 Nephi 8:5 ff. in the Book
of Mormon], but the memory of them also stayed in the minds of the Lamanites,
or the American Indians, for fifteen hundred years.  Shortly after the
discovery of America, the Catholic missionaries and explorers learned that the
American Indians had a tradition of the great convulsions of nature that took
place at the time of Christ’s death.  For example, I would like to quote from a
Lamanite, an Indian prince named Ixtlilxochitl, who lived near the city of Mexico
and wrote his book in 1600 A.D.:..

For fifteen hundred years, down to the time of the Spanish conquest, the
Lamanites, or the American Indians, retained that knowledge [“...that Christ
had visited ancient America…]...    p. 408 my emphasis

Chapter 22, The First Mission To The Indians (Part One)

What the Book of Mormon Promises the Indians.  The Book of Mormon,
which tells many interesting stories about the ancestors of the American
Indians, declares that in ancient times the Indians were called Lamanites.
It also promises that in the last days many of the Indians or Lamanites will
be converted to the gospel of Jesus Christ by means of the Book of Mormon…

Four Missionaries to Teach the Indians.  As soon as the brethren had read
these great promises in the Book of Mormon for the Indians, they became
very anxious to carry the book to the red men and teach them that this book
tells the true story of the origin and history of their forefathers.
In September, 1830, the Prophet received a revelation, calling Oliver Cowdery,
Parley P. Pratt, Peter Whitmer, Jr., and Ziba Peterson to go on a mission to the
Indians upon the western borders of the United States… p. 89  my emphasis

The Four Elders Start Westward.  Toward the last of October, 1830, the four
men,...started on foot fifteen hundred miles for the “Borders of the Lamanites,”
as commanded by the Lord.    p. 91  my emphasis

Chapter 23, The First Mission To The Indians (Part Two)

On the Western Frontier.  “After much fatigue and some suffering we arrived
in Independence, in the county of Jackson, on the extreme western frontier of
Missouri, and of the United States.”

The Indians--Shawnees and Delawares.  ...three [of the five elders] crossed the
border of the United States into the reservations of the Shawnee and Delaware
Indians.  “Passing through the tribe of Shawnees we tarried one night with them,
and the next day crossed the Kansas River and entered among the Delawares.”

Ten Nations of the Delawares.  The great chief [Anderson], who headed the ten
nations or tribes of the Delawares, invited the three men [the three elders, one of
which was Oliver Cowdery] into his “comfortable cabin”...

The Great Spirit Gave America to the Red Men.  At the invitation of Chief
Anderson, Oliver Cowdery arose and, standing by the cabin fire, told in simple
but beautiful language the thrilling story of the coming of the Book of Mormon and
the restored gospel [to Chief Anderson and a council of forty of his chiefs]..
p. 95  my emphasis

The Mission to the Indians Closed.  “We continued for several days to instruct
the Old Chief and many of his tribe...The excitement now reached the frontier
settlements in Missouri, and stirred up the jealousy and envy of the Indian Agents
and the sectarian missionaries,” who forced the elders to leave the reservation of
the Indians and return to Jackson County, where the missionaries baptized several
white converts. Thus came to a close the first mission to the Lamanites [or
Indians as commanded by God Himself].   p. 97  my emphasis

1961-3:  When Jesus Visited Some “Other Sheep,” by Richard O. Cowan,
December 1961 The Instructor

Following His resurrection, when Jesus first appeared to the Nephites, who were
Israelites descended from Joseph (1 Nephi 5:14), He told them that they were
the “other sheep” of whom he had spoken. (3 Nephi 15:21.)....When the Spanish
conquistadors reached America 15 centuries after the Savior’s visit, they found
Indian traditions and practices which pointed back to the visit of Jesus Christ
among their forefathers [the Nephites].  p. 444  my emphasis

The South American mission will be a power in the church.”
The people [of South America] are a mixture of many nations, mainly Europeans

Why do they [Polynesians] have this great faith? It is because these
people are of the blood of Israel.  They are heirs to the promises of
the Book of Mormon. God is now awakening them to their great destiny.
As Latter-day Saints we have always believed that the Polynesians
are descendants of Lehi and blood relatives of the American Indians,
despite the contrary theories of other men. For that reason, from the
beginning of our Church history we have had more than an ordinary interest
in them as a people.   p. 112 my emphasis

During the early part of April there will be issued by the Deseret News a Church
work entitled “The Articles of Faith,” the same being a series of lectures on
the principal doctrines of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints

been approved by the First Presidency and I heartily commend it to the
members of the Church.

This was the first public announcement of the publication of a book which
has been in more or less constant use in various Church theological
classes and in the hands of individual Church members ever since;  and
which in January, 1966, will mark the approach of its 67th birthday as the
official textbook for Course 28 in Sunday School

Faith] that has now gone through 42 editions (including 243,000 copies) in
English, has been translated into a number of foreign languages, and is still
in use as a textbook two-thirds of a century later,...  p.432*

1969-1:  The Great White Father Will Return,” by Marie F. Felt, January 1969
The Instructor (Church’s “Official” Sunday School Periodical.)

It was a dramatic moment when Christopher Columbus and his men landed
on American shores in 1492.  Columbus called the people he found there
Indians, because he thought he had arrived in India.  But this was not so. This
was America, a choice land to which the ancestors of these people, headed
by the prophet Lehi, had come from far-off Jerusalem 600 years before
Jesus was born in Bethlehem.

These Indians who greeted Columbus were really what we in the church call
“Lamanites,” descendants of Lehi’s son Laman.  This book (hold up the
Book of Mormon) tells us that Laman had refused to do that which was right, so
he and those who followed him became dark-skinned...    p. 19 my emphasis

...Our Book of Mormon is the record which tells about this visit [Christ in
America] and about the ancestors of the Indians who had already lived in
America for many, many years even before Christ came to them.  The
Prophet knew that one of the purposes of this great book was to teach the
Indians their true heritage and present the gospel to them.

Joseph Smith had barely organized the Church when, in September 1830,
four young men were called by revelation to take the Book of Mormon to
the Indians [referred to as “Lamanites” in the Doctrine & Covenants].

In November, 1830, the missionaries visited with the Wyandots
[Indians/Lamanites] in Ohio.  These Indians received them warmly and were
joyous over the story of their ancestors told in the Book of Mormon...the
missionaries crossed the Kansas River to preach to the Delawares

of Mormon and the history it told of his ancestors…    p. 20    my emphasis
